Option Group
Providing legal coverage for South Carolina homeschoolers
under the Third Option law.
Welcome to Ninja3Op!
We exist to cover your homeschooling experience legally in South Carolina under the Third Option homeschool law.
We are a statewide third option group, so we only offer legal coverage and do not provide co-op classes, field trips, group meetings, etc. We encourage you to join a local homeschool support group where you can connect with like-minded families, find local activities and resources, and get the support you need in this venture. There are also many homeschool groups on Facebook, where you can ask questions and get information on field trips, events, and homeschool classes available in your area.
Please explore the links at the top of this page for some introductory information about homeschooling, the full SC homeschooling law, and other resources you may find helpful in your pursuit of homeschooling. Enjoy the journey with your child!
Meet the Director
I’m Jennifer Ackerman, a mom of eight and veteran homeschooler. In my 30+ years of homeschooling experience, I have graduated seven high schoolers, led several local support groups and regional third-option associations, and created high school transcripts for homeschool graduates.
When we started homeschooling in 1988, it was almost unheard of. The first thing people would ask me was “Is it legal?” Now, almost everyone I talk to knows at least someone who has homeschooled.
Home education in the US has exploded into a vibrant movement, and there are myriad options available for curriculum, instruction methods, and community. What hasn’t changed is parents’ desire to free their children from a cookie-cutter school system to educate them in a free and personalized environment. Now that I’m “retired” from homeschooling, (I’m helping homeschool some grandchildren) I enjoy supporting other parents as they navigate the journey of educating their children at home.
Our family has lived and homeschooled in the Midlands, Lowcountry, and Upstate of South Carolina. My husband and I now live in Blackstock, SC where we are remodeling our 125-year-old farmhouse. I enjoy restoring furniture, gardening, keeping chickens, and spoiling our 15 (and counting!) grandkids.
